A couple of weeks ago I discovered a website – www.firstrowsports.com – that does nothing more threatening than allowing people to watch out-of-town hockey, basketball and soccer games.
When I retuned to the website about a week ago, hoping to find a Boston Bruins game I could watch, I was shocked by the sight that greeted me.
No longer was the webstie offering me access to out-of-town sports events. Instead, I was greeted by the sight of three badges – one each for the United States Department of Justice, the “National Intellectual Property Rights Co-ordinating Center” and Homeland Security Investigations.
Directly below the bold positioning of the badges was a statement that “this domain has been seized by ICE – Homeland Security Investigations.”
And just below that was a stern warning that first-time offenders who download such inocuous material as a movie, a song, or a sports event without authorization are subject – upon that first conviction – to five years in federal prison, “restitution,” forefeiture and a hefty fine.
