When the father of then 6-year-old Elian Gonzalez flew to the U.S. a few years ago to rescue his son from American “custody,” he was asked why he didn’t take the opportunity to flee from Cuba and seek asylum in the U.S.
“Human rights,” the Cuban dad replied. “In the U.S., human rights is the right of a rich man to own a newspaper. In Cuba, it’s the right of every man to food, shelter, health care and education.”
Which country has the right formula?
The United States is the richest country in the world but 3.5 million people are homeless. The United States is the richest country in the world but 47 million people don’t have access to health care. The United States is the richest country in the world but millions depend on food banks and soup kitchens for daily sustenance. The United States is the richest country in the world but millions can’t afford higher education.
And in many of these regards, Canada is becoming more and more like the U.S.
