One year ago last week, Justin Trudeau – a son of charismatic and flamboyant late Canadian Liberal prime minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau, who governed this country for most of the years from 1968 to 1983 – stunned most pundits by turning a losing campaign into a smashing aaaaaaajustinhalloweenmajority on October 16, 2015. Trudeau The Son won the election by cobbling together a very “leftish” campaign rhetoric at the very moment that incompetent and elitist NDP leader Thomas Mulcair was demolishing Canada’s 55-year-old working-class party. While Mulcair’s ill-conceived notion that pivoting the NDP’s agenda sharply toward the right at aaaaaathomas3a time when decades of economic stagnation were pushing the majority of Canadians toward the left, created a massive void on the progressive side of the political spectrum that Justin Trudeau was as anxious as a bull in heat to jump into. The tragic reality, however, is that a billion pretty words cannot by themselves change reality; the words only attain any meaning from the actions – or total lack thereof – that back them up. And so far, very few of those pretty words have attained any meaning and, for many of them, it appears to be little more than a cynical bait-and-switch.
