The leftist path to a Mulcair NDP majority

By Henry McRandall
WRISEUP.COM

Canada’s social democratic federal NDP took a major step toward winning the next election in 2015 by choosing charismatic and thoroughly bilingual Quebec MP Thomas Mulcair today as its new leader.
But if the NDP is to ever win a national majority, then it will be up to every member and every supporter of the party to dissuade Mulcair from shifting the party toward the centre (read: “right”
Just as British Columbia leadership candidate Nathan Cullen was wrong in suggesting the NDP should divvy up all the federal ridings among themselves, the Liberals and the Green Party and not run candidates against each other, Mulcair and his supporters are delusional if they think shifting even more toward the centre (or right) is the formula for success.
A couple of years ago, The Globe & Mail (Canada’s only national newspaper and primarily a business daily), ran an online survey asking its readers to categorize themselves politically from among seven options: “Far Left,” “Left of Centre,” “Centre-Left,” “Centre,” “Centre-Right,” “Right of Centre,” and “Far Right.”
Forty-six percent of respondents chose one of the three options including the word “Left,” 42% chose one of the three options including the word “Right,” and just 12% chose simply “Centre.”
Moreover, if you add the vote totals of the three parties most commonly regarded by the public as being “leftist,” – the NDP, the Parti Quebecois and the Green Party – and add just 25% of the Liberal Party’s vote total, you come up with a “leftish” vote total of 45.225%.
The entire Liberal Party vote total was 18.9%. Although failed leadership candidate Cullen may view the Liberal Party as a “liberal” or “progressive” or “leftish” party, and although new NDP leader Thomas Mulcair may see room for expansion of NDP support by shifting toward the centre (or right), they are both wrong. On brazen Tory hypocrite Vic Toews

By Henry McRandall
WRISEUP.COM

It has long been traditional for right-wing politicians in North America – Republican Teabaggers in Amerikkka and Conservatives (or Tories) in Canada – to don a fraudulent veil of morality as they hypocritically attempt to legislate the morality of the Other 99 Percent.
So it came as no surprise a few weeks ago when extreme-right-wing Conservative Public Safety Minister Vic Toews stood up in Canada’s House of Commons and shrilly screamed at opposition Mps: “You’re either with us or you’re with the child pornographers.”
Toews, of course, was trying to ram through a Tory piece of legislation that actually had very little to do with child pornography and very much to do with allowing any cop in Canada to spy on any Canadian citizen of his or her choosing without even having to obtain a court warrant authorizing the electronic spying.
But while Toews was desperately trying to protray himself and his criminally corrupt Conservative Party as some sort of “pillars of virtue,” the sordidly sorry history of the Conservative Party proves that it is neither a party of morality nor a credible protector of children against child abusers. Jeb Bush: Amerikkka’s neo-lynching king

By Henry McRandall
WRISEUP.COM

It was under then-Republican Teabagger governor Jeb Bush that Florida passed a law so grotesque that it led the U.S. in the wave of “legalized” lynchings that have happened since.
And while Florida may not be the only Amerikkkan state – in fact, there are at least 21, with another handful now pondering them – with a so-called “stand you ground” law, but it is the state where prosecutors and judges have most insanely hewed to the legal obscenity.
Last month’s savage slaughter of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin – an unarmed black kid weighing less than 140 pounds – by George Zimmerman – a well-armed, 280-pound, 28-year-old white man – demands nothing less than the repeal of every one of these so-called “stand you ground” laws, which are really nothing more and nothing less than a re-legalization of lynching. Republican Teabaggers’ secret agenda: To totally crush the Other 99 Percent

By Henry McRandall
WRISEUP.COM

The insane illogic of their entire economic program notwithstanding, Amerikkka’s Republican Teabaggers seem aggressively intent on ramming their lunacy down the country’s throat – even if it means totally crushing every last member of the Other 99 Percent – the poor, the working class and the middle class.
Numerous independent studies have been conducted in recent years – including a massive new study by the moderate Brookings Institution released just this week – of government taxation policies and their effects on private-sector investment.
Not one credible study has ever found one iota of evidence that taxing capital gains at a lower rate than earned income – or reducing taxes for corporations and/or the wealthy – has ever had the result of increasing private-sector investment in the domestic economy.
On the contrary, however, there is ample evidence not only that low tax rates on corporations and the wealthy directly cause massive government deficits but also tend to actually reduce private-sector domestic investment. ‘Land of the free, home of the brave’!?!?

By Henry McRandall
WRISEUP.COM

The United States of Amerikkka is fond of scolding other countries about their alleged democratic shortcomings and praising itself as “the land of the free” and “the home of the brave.”
But any Amerikkkan who is still brainwashed by all that brazen bullshit needs to have his or her head read.
Just recently, in a move almost totally ignored by the Amerikkkan corporate mainstream mass media, the House of Representatives quietly passed a Bill that would serve no other purpose than to kill whatever is left of Amerikkka’s fraudulent “democracy.”
H.R. 347, as the Bill is officially called, was passed by a vote of 432 to just three.
And its provisions are that anyone who protests in the vicinity of the White House, the Capitol, any federal government building, any political convention or any bank is liable, upon conviction, to 10 years’ imprisonment and a $25,000 fine. Did Harper steal Canada’s last election?

By Henry McRandall
WRISEUP.COM

The evidence is mounting that Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper may have stolen Canada’s May 2, 2011 federal election, and, if that is the case, Canadians have a right to a new election – now!
Over the past couple of weeks, some of the country’s mainstream mass media have been embarrassed into following up on the story after it was revealed that Elections Canada had been swamped with more than 31,000 complaints about fraudlent phone calls aimed at voter restraint.
The calls – “robocalls” to be precise – were automated phone calls in which computers placed the calls and played fraudulent recorded messages aimed at misleading voters who were not Conservative supporters.
How would these computers – which can literally place thousands of calls simultaneously – know which voters were not Tory supporters? From the computerized records of previous Conservative Party calls to these voters asking whether Stephen Harper could count on their support on election day. If they said no, they were targeted for robocalls aimed at stopping them from voting against the extreme-right-wing Tories. Continue reading “Did Harper steal Canada’s last election?”

NATO’s ‘humanitarian intervention’ has spun Libya into a spiral of bloody mayhem

By Henry McRandall
WRISEUP.COM

About a year ago, the Amerikkkan administration dispatched the CIA to Libya to sow the seeds of uprising against strongman leader Muammar Kadhafi and foment an eventual civil war.
Having used its proxies to set large swaths of the country ablaze, the Amerikkkan regime then spent many long weeks trying to bulldoze the UN security council into authorizing a so-called “humanitarian intervention” in the beleaguered country to be carried out by Amerikkka and its NATO client states.
Concerned that such intervention would be neither “humanitarian” nor of ultimate benefit to the Libyan people, Russia and China initially opposed it.
As Amerikkka strong-armed more and more countries into pressuring Russia and China to allow the inervention, the two eastern members of the Security Council buckled.
They eventually conceded, but insisted – and this limitation was clearly spelt out in the UN authorization – that the “humanitarian” intervention not have “regime change” as a goal.
True, Muammar Kadhafi was brutal in his treatment of dissenters. And true, the Kadhafi family did steal many millions of dollars from Libyan government coffers.
But Kadhafi did give the Libyan people by far the highest standard of living in all of Africa; and he was a staunch defender of the equality of women. (Just a few days ago, Libya’s new rulers announced they would allow Libyan men to have as many as three wives, a brtual assault on the human rights of women.)
In fact, there is credible evidence that Kadhafi enjoyed the support of most of the Libyan people. Continue reading “NATO’s ‘humanitarian intervention’ has spun Libya into a spiral of bloody mayhem”

Pity the piss-poor Toronto Maple Leafs

By Henry McRandall
WRISEUP.COM

In 1967, the last year of the “original six” National Hockey League, the bizarrely vaunted Toronto Maple Leafs won their last Stanley Cup.
In the 45 years since, 24 others teams have joined the league and most of the newbies have one at least one cup.
But it seems the once-mighty Maple Leafs have been stuck in a “rebuilding” stage for almost half a century.
Across the province of Ontario, however, the newbie Ottawa Senators were in a “rebuilding” stage for about two months earlier this season and now stand just two points out of second place overall in the 15-team Eastern Conference.
Forty-five years of “rebuilding,” and what have the Toronto Maple Leafs got to show for it? Since the All-Star break way back in January, the lowly Leafs have been the worst team in the NHL.
They have almost no hopes left of making the playoffs this year and, if they don’t make the playoffs they will have failed to do so for longer than any other team in the league. Continue reading “Pity the piss-poor Toronto Maple Leafs”

The world’s worst warmonger — by far

By Henry McRandall
WRISEUP.COM

While the state of Israel and almost every one of the remaining Republican Teabagger presidential wannabes are rabidly beating the drums of war against Iran, it seems only timely to ask: “Who is really the world’s worst warmonger?”
While Iran has not attacked any other country in literally hundreds of years and has only been at war once in the past 200 years – after Ronald Reagan gave Iraq the go-ahead to attack Iran in the 1980s — Israel and Amerikkka have both almost always been at war with someone – throughout their existences.
Over the past 64 years, Israel has started wars with several of its Arab neighbours and has imprisoned most Palestinians in concentration-canp-like conditions for the past 45 years.
Amerikkka, on the other hand, has existed a little longer than Israel – 236 years to be precise.
And during those 236 years, Amerikkka has been involved in no less than 183 wars – most of which it started. Continue reading “The world’s worst warmonger — by far”

How about some freedom from religion?

By Henry McRandall
WRISEUP.COM

Most Amerikkkans and Canadians take great pride in the fact that their countries allow “freedom of religion,” – even granting massive tax exemptions to religious entrepreneurs – and supposedly follow strict “separation of church and state.”
And they routinely condemn other countries – especially Muslim countries – for the intermingling of church and state that occurs in those countries.
The preponderance of the evidence, however, suggests that all countries should seriously reconsider any notions of “freedom of religion” and, especially, any sort of tax exemptions for so-called religions.
I have followed fairly closely the Amerikkkan Republican presidential primaries and I must say I am appalled at the brazen hypocrisy and outright deception of the three remaining contenders – Mitt Romney, New Gingrich and especially Rick Santorum – who are still wearing their fake religious solemnity on their sleeves like some kind of medal of honour.
