How and why Toronto Star Editor Michael Cooke got me illegally blacklisted – Part 7

It quickly became evident after my second illegal firing by the (Montreal) Gazette in late 1981, that neither future Toronto Star Editor Michael Cooke nor Mel Morris nor the Gazette nor Southam Inc. nor the Brit-dominated power clique at the Toronto Star would be satisfied simply with my departure from the Gazette.
Cooke inspired his co-conspirators both with his false allegations about me as a political hazard and with his false tawdry tales about my personal character to help him destroy my professional career and my livelihood.
The day after my second dismissal, I began calling other Canadian newspapers in quest of a new job. And the response I got was astounding.
I had never before had difficulty finding employment in my chosen profession. Now, suddenly, nobody would even talk to me.

The billionaire Queen begs for charity

Multi-billionaire Betty Windsor no longer wants to pay to heat her own lavish digs.
Multi-billionaire Betty Windsor no longer wants to pay to heat her own lavish digs.

While millions of cash-strapped Britons are wondering how they will pay for heating fuel this winter, the multi-billionairess queen of England – Queen Elizabeth – has applied for winter heating assistance for her many palaces from a United Kingdom government fund set up to help the truly needy to just survive.
It should come as no surprise that the richest woman in the world – with a net worth of over $2 billion U.S., at last count – is queuing up at the public trough.
Right-wing demagogues like to attack low-income Britons, Americans and Canadians for feeling they have some sort of entitlement from government when the struggling global economy leaves them behind.
But it’s always the billionaires and the mega-millionaires – or their loyal lackeys – who are standing at the head of the line-up for public largesse.

How low would the Vatican dare to stoop?

After centuries of unbridled corruption, the Vatican has become a veritable den of iniquity.By Henry McRandall
WRISEUP.COM

As if the worldwide priestly child-abuse scandal weren’t enough, the Roman Catholic Church appears to be stooping to another new low as the Vatican Bank and its top executives come under investigation in Italy for money laundering.
That the Vatican bank should choose to get involved in money laundering should come as no surprise however.
In fact, it is merely a further extension of the church’s centuries-old practice of peddling “indulgences.” With these so-called “indulgences,” the church was in fact encouraging sin and criminality by the wealthy by implicitly advising them that they could be as evil as they wanted in their day-to-day lives and still buy themselves a seat in heaven by giving money to the church.

Yet another $6-billion Harper boondoggle

The Conservatives and Liberals both seem determined to widen the gap between Canada's rich and poor.

Canada’s federal government is struggling with a record deficit and what do the Stephen Harper Conservatives – backed by the Michael Ignatieff Liberals – do? They lavish another sordid $6-billion tax cut on corporations and the billionaires and mega-millionaires who control them.
And it’s not only the federal government that is cash-strapped. So are all the provinces.
But still they insist on giving still more tax cuts on corporations and the wealthy.
Canada’s federal and provincial governments have cut taxes for corporations and the wealthy over and over and over again over the past 30 years and what has it all wrought?

America’s creative new export strategy: Arm the client states to the teeth

The weapons of war take priority over bread and butter.

United States President Barack Obama has announced his intention to double America’s manufacturing exports within the next five years.
And it’s quickly becoming evident how he plans to do so. The strategy: Arm America’s client states to the teeth – at their own expense.
I call them client states rather than allies for an obvious reason: The word “allies” implies both partnership and equality, and America’s relations with the countries it’s willing to talk to are based on neither. Hence, a ountry is either an American “client state” or an “enemy.”
The simple fact of the matter is that there are very few manufacturing industries in which America is still able to compete with anyone: weapons, planes, construction equipment and, to a very limited extent, automobiles.

The Tea Party may yet save the Democrats

Bimbo Sarah Palin may have inadvertently turned the Tea Party into the Democrats' best friend.
Bimbo Sarah Palin may have inadvertently turned the Tea Party into the Democrats' best friend.

A funny thing happened to the Democrats on their way to a near-certain humilitation in November’s mid-term U.S. elections: they got waylaid by the Tea Party.
Until now it has appeared that the Democrats would lose control of either the U.S. Senate or the House of Representatives or – more likely – both.
After all, American voters gave America’s so-called “liberal” party a smashing victory in November, 2008, on the party’s promise of “Change We Need” and “Change We Can Depend On,” a socioeconomic transformation that the Republican presidential ticket of John McCain and Sarah Palin took great pains to characterize as a progressive redistribution of wealth.
The Democrats won the White House, a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate and a vast majority in the House of Representatives. Clearly, America’s voters were saying a resounding “YES!” to a massive downward redistribution of wealth from the top five percent of the population to the bottom 75 percent.

The Pope ‘feels’ the Belgian victims’ pain

Does Benedict have the balls to bite the bullet on female ordination, the vow of celibacy and sexual orientation?
Does Benedict have the balls to bite the bullet on female ordination, the vow of celibacy and sexual orientation?
By Henry McRandall

How apt it is that numerous groups plan to protest when Pope Benedict arrives tomorrow for a visit to Jolly Olde England.
In recent days, news squibs have crawled across the bottom of my screen on various all-news channels reporting first that Belgian authorities are currently dealing with more than 300 cases of alleged child sexual abuse at the hands of Roman Catholic priests and second that Pope Benedict has stated that he “feels the victims’ pain.”
It is only the latest in a string of instances over the past couple of years when the pope has had to “feel the pain” of victims of clerical child abuse suffered just about all over the world. In fact, he must be feeling the pain of so many people right now that one might think he is carrying the weight of the whole world on his shoulders.

It’s time to give Ireland back to the Irish

Could Belfast soon be part of a reunited Ireland?
Could Belfast soon be part of a reunited Ireland?

WRISEUP.COM

The time has come for Great Britain to implement a final solution to the Irish-English problem by giving Ulster or Northern Ireland – the six counties on the northeast of the Irish island that are now part of the United Kingdom – back to the Republic of Ireland.
Although Ulster or Northern Ireland has been largely at peace with itself – and with both Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland – for a number of years now, for many who have suffered under the legacy of 800 years of English-Irish “troubles,” the wounds still fester.
My own process in arriving at this conclusion a good many years ago was very difficult and required an enormous amount of meditation.

It’s time to make Canada’s public transit systems fast, frequent and free

Could London, Ontario, be a public transit pioneer?
Could London, Ontario, be a public transit pioneer?

If Canada is ever to meet its commitments under the Kyoto protocol on climate change – and Canada has perhaps the most onerous challenge in the world due to its climate – then it is going to have to rapidly develop public transit systems across the country that offer a viablke and attractive alternative to the private automobile.
In essence, public transit systems in every urban area of the country are going to have to become fast, frequent and free. They are also going to have to become comprehensive and around-the-clock.
This is what Canada’s 21st Century intra-urban public transit systems must quickly come to look like:

America needs to get over itself

America's Ground Zero is just another piece of real estate.
America's Ground Zero is just another piece of real estate.
By Henry McRandall
WRISEUP.COM

Tomorrow will mark the ninth anniversary of the horrific events of “9/11″ and the United States of America is still licking its festering wounds.
The way the average American still obsesses about it, one would think it was the worst tragedy in the history of mankind: 3,000 American adults were killed in one day.
The simple reality, however, is that there have been many, many, many far worse tragedies in history and they continue right up to today.
In a deep backwoods town in Florida some non-descript so-called “Christian” evangelist is still musing about a possible Bonfire Of The Korans tomorrow.
And the bizarre campaign against an Islamic inter-faith community centre near so-called “Ground Zero” in New York has spawned campaigns and violence against the construction of Islamic mosques elsewhere in the country.
