Feds promote right-wing ‘think-tank’ scam

Another taxpayer-financed right-wing "think tank" is the last thing Canada needs.By Henry McRandall
WRISEUP.COM

Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty is corruptly using his cabinet position and public funds to promote a new right-wing so-called “think tank” that plans on using its bazarre status as a tax-free charity to promote the power and privileges of Canada’s mostly-American corporate elite.
Specifically, Flaherty is using his political status to urge Bay Street insiders to generously support the nascent Macdonald-Laurier Institute, the brainchild of extreme right-wing economist Brian Crowley.
And the federal government has already granted the so-called institute tax-exempt status as a “charitable” organization which means not only that the “think tank” won’t have to pay any taxes but also that corporations and wealthy individuals who contribute money to this “institute,” will be able to deduct their contributions from their taxes.
Forgive me if I am missing something here; I always thought “charities” were organizations that advocated for the least fortunate rather than for the most fortunate.

It all depends on whose ox is being gored

Ponzi scheme king Bernie Madoff had his day in court today and, at the tender age of 71, was sentenced to 150 years’ imprisonment for his $65-billion fraud. It can safely be assumed Madoff will never again see the light of day outside his prison walls.
Among Bernie’s victims were thousands of pensioners and others of modest means who had entrusted their life savings to his care.
Also among Bernie’s victims were many charitable foundations.
But it’s not for scamming either of those two categories of victims that Madoff will now be behind bars forever.
There was a third category of victims: the very wealthy and very well connected and it is for scamming these people that Bernie must be severely punished.

On the tragic life and death of Michael Jackson

This world was never meant for such a damaged and fatally flawed genius.

As the saying goes, “there’s never two without three,” so many casually expected that 86-year-old Ed McMahon and 62-year-old Farrah Fawcett would quickly be followed in death by another longtime celebrity.
But it came as an enormous shock when 50-year-old Michael Jackson completed the trio.
The deaths of McMahon and Fawcett were both tragic in their own unique ways. But it is hard to discern whether Jackson’s death was more or less tragic than his life.
Undeniably, Jackson was an artistic genius and a cultural phenomenon. His fabulous fame and fortune grew almost immeasurably. His masterful musical and artistic creations thralled and thrilled the world.
But throughout his meteoric career, something remained terribly wrong in the heart and mind and soul of Michael Jackson himself.

Women as second-class citizens?

In the last few days, the North American news media have grown fond of pointing out that women seem to be spearheading the current protests in Iran.
And why shoudln’t they? In Iran – as in every country that has a state religion – women are treated as, at best, second-class citizens. In fact, this is also true in most countries that don’t have a state religion but have strong religious traditions.
The roots of woman-repression can be traced squarely to the Old Testament which, incidentally, was written almost enitrely by men – angry, bitter old men.
The rationale behind the reality is that “Eve” was the first sinner and that it was “Eve” who led “Adam” into sin.
It is hard to convince the religious that “Adam” and “Eve” never actually existed, that their tale was merely a Biblical parable.

The urgency of U.S. health-care reform

For profit's sake, the richest country in the world still rations health care.

All the vested interests have ramped up their lobbying and advertising in opposition to U.S. President Barack Obama’s proposed health care reform.
But it is important that the politicians and the public ignore the tide of deceit and misinformation.
The United States – the richest country in the world – is the only industrialized country that does not have single-payer universal health care.
That’s not just a tragedy for the 47 million Americans who have no access to health care or to the 100 million Americans who are without health-care coverage at some point in the year.
It is also a great threat to public health at large both in the U.S. and around the world.

Corporate rule puts global survival at risk

Corporate citizenship is a pox upon the entire world.

The Wolrd Bank this week again revised its projections of global economic activity downward and the new predictions reveal a rapidly worsening situation.
Just a few weeks ago, the World Bank was predicting composite global economic activity would decline 1.7 percent. It is now expecting that decline to worsen to 2.9 percent, almost two-thirds worse than its most recent forecast.
In fact, the only two significant national economies in the world expected to grow this year are those of China and India.
The Bank is predicting only very modest global economic growth next year and almost all of it tied in to government stimulus spending.
What happens when the stimulus spending ends, as Canadian Prime Moron Stephen Harper is proposing?

People of Iran, now is the time for your revolution!

Iran's insane "supreme leader," Ayatollah Khamenei, seems set to unleash a bloodbath.Iran's insane "supreme leader," Ayatollah Khamenei, seems set to unleash a bloodbath.By Mike Bodrogkozi

Iran is in chaos following its latest election and the eyes of the world are watching. The declared victor, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, supposedly won with 64% of the vote. He was declared the victor even though only two-thirds of the vote had been counted.
With the country now plunged into civil unrest, the entire world continues to chime in to see the spectacle unfold. The normally downtrodden and tightly controlled population has held large protests, often violently one-sided thanks to their regime’s fighting back to control those who should have mouths shut.
The first runner-up, Mir-Hossein Mousavi, scored 35% of the vote, followed by Mohsen Rezaee and Mehdi Karroubi who, together, scored about 6% of the remaining votes.
The supreme leader, Ayatolllah Ali Khamenei, came out in an effort to calm the unrest, to declare the fishy election legitimate. This seemed to make matters worse, and only to serve to break the taboo and cast doubt on the Ayatollah’s own legitimacy. Now , for the first time, large populations are speaking out against him. For the past few weeks, television newscasts have been replete with coverage of the spillover of drug-related Mexican gang violence into the U.S.
Much of Mexico has become a no-man’s-land as that country’s drug cartels, nurtured and enriched by the War On Drugs, have issued a direct challenge to the elected government and the enitre law-enforcement apparatus.
The War On Drugs has been an abject failure, achieving nothing but the criminalization of millions of Americans and Canadians for simply indulging in recreational drugs, the bringing of law itself into disrepute, and the creation of a vast network of billionaire drug lords all backed by their own private armies.

The Iranians still know how to protest

The turmoil in Teheran, Iran, over the past week over the disputed result of the country’s presidential election reveals one thing about the Iranian people: They still have the consciousness, courage and conviction to rise up when circumstances demand.
It is an attribute that is sorely lacking in the populations of most advanced industrial nations, with the notable exception of France.
When George W. Bush stole the U.S. presidential elections of 2000 and 2004, there was little public outcry, due in large part to the failure of the corporate mass media to properly inform the voters about what had happened.
Even when there have been public demonstrations over the past generation in Canada and the U.S., they have been tepid, sparsely attended affairs.

Iggy knuckles under to Harper — again

To no one’s big surprise, federal Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff today knuckled under to Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper yet again and agreed to continue being Harper’s rubber stamp in Parliament.
But was Iggy really knuckling under to the Tories or to the CEOs of Canada’s major banks – the very banks that got $200 billion in goodies under the current Conservative budget?
Indeed, who is calling the shots in the Liberal Party?
Yesterday, Toronto Star columnist Linda McQuaig revealed a previously unreported segment of that infamous tape of Nautral Resources Minister Lisa Raitt.
That segment of tape inadvertently disclosed that the presidents of three major Canadian banks ordered Ignatieff and the Liberals to abandon the proposed Liberal-NDP coalition and support the Harper budget or face the cutoff of all funding for the cash-strapped Liberals.
